Copenhagen is known to be one of the best foodie cities in the world, but it is also known to be one of the most expensive places to eat out. Lucky for me there’s Copenhagen Dining Week. This is a week in February where many of the city’s best restaurants offer a set 3 course menu for a greatly reduced rate. My friends and I took advantage of this and enjoyed a meal at the hip and healthy RetroGusto.
Unlike in the US the serving sizes here are much more practical so you can actually enjoy a 3-course meal without feeling stuffed. Our meal started with a risotto
with homemade Italian sausage, broccoli and cheese cream. The main course was a red wine braised beef chuck-roll with smoked mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. And the dessert was a pannacotta of coffee with caramel and white chocolates crumble. The first two courses were absolutely delicious but I wasn’t a huge fan of the dessert, since I don’t like coffee.
What I really liked most about this meal was the fresh ingredients used and the pride the restaurant took in what they produced. Each course was beautifully plated and presented to us as it came to the table. The food was meant to be appreciate slowly not just wolfed down. Additionally the meal was the perfect size to allow enjoyment and nourishment without being overindulgent or causing fullness/bloating. This seems to be a theme throughout Europe and one I’m a fan of.
Going out to eat can be fun and a great way to give yourself a break from cooking and some time with friends. And when you order and eat consciously you can fit a few meals out here and there into a healthy lifestyle. However, in terms of knowing what you’re eating and having control over the oils and such going into your meal nothing beats cooking at home. Making your own food also tends to be much cheaper. If you’re going to eat out look for deals like dining week and look at the menu ahead of time to make sure where you’re going has healthy and filling options to meet your needs. Overall keep in mind that balance is key, so have some fun and eat out, have something you enjoy but not something that will make you feel sick and then get back into your routine the next meal.
