A Needed Snack

Hello from Copenhagen! I’m spending the semester the semester here studying and exploring, I’ve never been here before and don’t speak Danish so it’s very new and exciting. I’m also living with a host family which is awesome because I can really see what Danish culture is like.

One way to see the culture is the food. I was aware that they would have different diets but a few things that really struck me were: they eat way less meat than us, they generally eat less protein and more carbs than at least my family does and most surprising they don’t eat eggs for breakfast the way we do. I’ve only been here 3 days so I’m just starting to get a feel for the area and living here but thought I’d share my first impressions.

In terms of food I’m going to have to adjust my habits a bit but don’t plan to abandon them completely. For example, I’ve noticed the lower meat and egg consumption so have been thinking on ways to get more protein. So far I’ve found some good yogurt and cheese options, then today I was super hungry around 3 pm and popped into a local grocery store to find this gem.

A “NUPO One Meal” protein bar. This was the only bar in the store but it was a fair price (less than $2) and had 37 grams of protein so I bought one and enjoyed. Nutritionally the bar had 37 grams of protein, 28 g of carbs, 9.6 g fat and 0 g sugar, thats a pretty tough ratio of protein:sugar to beat. One thing I’ve noticed about bars lately is that at first they don’t feel very filling as they can sometimes take a while to digest. One thing I’ve been doing to deal with this is to eat them slowly and drink lots of water with them. That’s exactly what I did on the bus this afternoon, I sat back enjoyed my protein and drank a whole Nalgene.
