You know those foods that are labeled as healthy but really aren’t? Well granola can be one of those. Some granolas are full of added sugars and oils… but luckily you can take back granola by making your own. I do this all the time, I used to have a recipe but honestly it’s one of those things you can just make by feel.
I make mine with rolled oats. From there I add nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, really whatever I feel like), canola oil and maple syrup. The key here is balance, you don’t want too many nuts and you definitely don’t want too much syrup and oil. You want the contents of your mixing bowl not to be dry but you don’t want them to be drenched. Think of lightly coating the nuts and oats. I also add coconut flakes and flax seed. Sometimes I add in protein powder too.
Once all the ingredients are mixed put them on a sheet pan. Put the sheet pan in the oven at 350°F until golden brown. The cook time will vary a bit based on volume and oven but it usually takes 25-35 minutes. It’s super important to use a spatula to “flip” or “scramble” the granola by pushing it around the pan so it doesn’t burn.
Once your granola is cooked you can let it cool then add dried fruit if you please (be careful with portions). This granola will be healthier than store bought versions and customized to your preferences. My favorite way to enjoy it is on top of greek yogurt to add some crunch and flavor to a high protein snack/breakfast.
